Few cricketers have garnered global attention like Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The ‘Thala’ (meaning, head or leader in Tamil) of Indian cricket has been a bulwark of the sport with his performances on and off the pitch winning the hearts of fans and fellow players across the globe.
Along with his capability to hit the ball a long way, and hands that whip the bails off like a Wild West gunman and his pistol, Dhoni’s ice-cool demeanor in even the most pressurizing of situations mark him as a unique individual in the sport’s history. This amalgamation of calm, confidence and charisma is what has made Dhoni successful, not just on the pitch, but also off it.

MS DHONI: CAREER IN NUMBERS
MS Dhoni’s emergence on the international cricket stage was nothing short of extraordinary, when he was called to the Indian team at the end of 2004 as a capable middle order batsman and wicket keeper. But the start couldn’t have gone worse as he was run out for a duck in his debut game. But like he would do throughout his career with other players, Dhoni was backed to the hilt by the Indian team despite a few early failures. The team’s backing finally paid off as Dhoni smashed his first ODI century in his typically explosive style, scoring a sizzling 148 against Pakistan, in Visakhapatnam, in 2005. From that fateful day onwards, Dhoni didn’t look back. The swashbuckling cricketer continued to dominate with the bat and behind the stumps, making him an immovable object in the Indian lineup. After making his mark as a hard-hitting lower order batsman, an elite finisher and a lightning fast wicketkeeper (which continue to this day), Dhoni left his most indelible mark as a captain, leading the Indian team to historic triumphs in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 Cricket World Cup where he hit the memorable winning six in the final, and finally the Champions Trophy in 2013. In doing so, he became the first and only captain to win all three major ICC trophies cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s best captains and cricketers.

FAMILY, SOCIAL MEDIA AND PERSONAL LIFE
Dhoni’s illustrious career has been recounted and recollected with zest through plenty of memoirs and books written on him and his journey. Some of the eminent literary works on his career include:
- The Dhoni Touch: unraveling the enigma that is Mahendra Singh Dhoni, written by cricket journalist and author Bharat Sundaresan.
- Captain Cool: The MS Dhoni Story, that unravels a lot about Dhoni off the field and as a leader. Written by Gulu Ezekiel and there are three more updated versions of the book available.
- A chapter on him was featured in the book, India’s Small Town Cricket Heroes by K.R. Guruprasad, an eminent cricket journalist, reporter and author.
While all eyes are on Dhoni when he steps onto the cricket field, he is not an active social media person and lives a pretty secluded life, away from the watchful eyes of the world when he doesn’t pick up a bat or the keeping gloves. But with most posts covering only promotional content, most of the content surrounding his social life is available through content available on his wife, Sakshi Singh Rajput, and daughter Ziva’s social media accounts. Dhoni and Sakshi got married in 2010, in Dehradun, after a few years of courtship, and became parents five years later when Ziva was born.
A rare occurrence that provided fans and the common public a chance to have an up, close and personal view of Dhoni’s journey happened when a biopic on his life titled, “MS Dhoni: An Untold Story”, released in 2016. The late Sushant Singh Rajput played the titular character, portraying the trials and tribulations faced by Dhoni from growing up in a humble background in small-town India to realizing a career in cricket to hitting the winning six in the 2011 World Cup. It’s widely believed that Dhoni was paid nearly ₹30 crore in rights for the movie.
In 2019, the Jharkhand State Cricket Association named the South Stand of their stadium in Ranchi after the finest son of their soil. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Cricket Association honoured Dhoni by dedicating the seats J282-J286 in his honour, commemorating the place where he hit the winning six to lead India to the 2011 World Cup title.
In December 2023, Dhoni was honoured by the BCCI who retired his iconic #7 jersey. Dhoni became only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to have their national jersey number retired by the controlling body of cricket in India. Talk about creating an unparalleled legacy. Not bad for a man who came from a small, unheralded part of India, isn’t it?
The man who put Ranchi and Indian cricket on the world map showed the heights which confidence, character and commitment can take a person to irrespective of where he or she hailed from. And similar to his batting, Dhoni continues to hit it out of the park with his business choices and investments, adding further value to his vast business empire and elevating his net worth, lifestyle and status as one of India’s finest sporting and civilian exponents.
